Orthoptics is looking at the balance of the eyes and how they work together as a pair. Double vision? I am you man. Lazy eye (amblyopia)? I am your man! Well I will be in a year and a half anyway. It is a tough course which involves going on placements for 4 weeks at a time. So far I have been to Nottingham, Middlesbrough, Birmingham and Edinburgh. They were all really great placements and I learnt so much there. Turning all that book knowledge into practice is the hardest bit though. No patient fits neatly into a category. But I guess that's why I love the job already. No patient is the same, they all have their own story and it is fantastic to hear about them. I guess not always but that's a different topic. The look on a patients face when I have helped them is something I think will always be amazing to me. A little known man making a difference to peoples lives is a wonderful thing!
